I have never and will never get a flu shot because of things like this. My cousin, who was born in 1972, got a vaccination as a baby that caused him to have muscular dystrophy. I remember seeing something on a news show about certain people who got that vaccination having permanent problems and they later stopped giving that one.
This thing won't let me post via twitter today… oh well… I heard about this last week. I got into an argument with my parents over this. The thing is, like with all medications and vaccines we take, there are side effects. The side effects outweigh the benefits and the possibility of a debilitating effect like hers is so rare… 1 in a million is wild. The crazy thing to me is that is was the Flu shot not a vaccine for a more deadly disease or sickness. I've opted to never take Flu shot because I rather take my chances with it.
I just feel so bad for her. I just don't know about that flu shot. I know that the her side effects are pretty rare but I've seen how it affects others too. My parents got the flu shot last year and my mom ended up getting the flu & my dad was sick for a month right after getting it. I decided that I won't get that or the H1N1 vaccine either.
I am not sure if I would go to a doctor that just has a Ph.D. I like my doctors with M.ds. This is a sad situation but a vaccine is just that, a vaccine. For every rare case like this there are so many people who are helped. I get a flu vaccine every year and have never had any issues or illnesses because of it. Lets not paint it all with broad brush. I am skeptical of anyone who has my health in their hands but they are doctors for a reason. If I get seriously ill you can bet your butt I will be going to my doctor to get it checked out. The worst thing you can do is self-diagnose! Believe me, that is not good either. I used to do that myself thinking I was going to be on top of it in case they were slacking. For every lucky person that gets it right there are 10 hypochondriacs behind him getting it wrong.
Another thing:
Whoever wrote the post above about everything having side effects is correct. Anything you take whether it is over-the-counter, prescription or even natural (herbs) has side effects. You have to decide if the benefits outweigh the risk. Either way, I think parents should be letting their kids get the swine flu vaccine as well. That one is killing little kids like nothing. Tens of thousands of people die from the regular flu each year. If you don't have a compromised immune system, not in the healthcare field, college (or enclosed space), really old, new parent, pregnant or really young, you may not need it. I get it because I work with nasty ass people who cough and spread germs in every direction and don't wash their hands.
Like the poster above and I havesaid, many things can cause side effects. When we take any medicine we need to be aware of what is going on. If you want to avoid flu vaccine, fine, just don't go into the side effects argument without looking at the things you take on a day-to-day basis. Please be aware of what you put in your bodies period. That goes for herbal/natural supplements too.
Good old birth contro (I think most forms esp the patch) l can cause blood clots.
Aleve (Naproxen)can cause a hole in your intestines and other stomach issues that can kill you.
Tylenol can cause liver and kidney problems.
Even cough syrup can do serious damage especially to children. .
Don't just take a stand on the vaccine. Take a stand on all of it and keep your eyes open. I read my prescription flap each time I get one. I read the back of medicine bottles too. If it is a new med I even match the pill description to the picture or description of it onllne.

This also makes me think about the HIV vaccination. If a flu vaccine can do this, I don't even want to imagine what an HIV vaccine could do.
