What’s Going On, Sammy Sosa?

The internet was abuzz last week when photos of baseball player, Sammy Sosa, surfaced showing the player looking several shades lighter than normal (see inset). Bloggers and blog readers alike were curious as to “why” or “how.” The Huffington Post is reporting that an acquaintance of Sosa’s stepped forward and said that he’s undergoing a skin rejuvenation treatment that causes his skin to appear lighter but if one were to see him person, they’d allegedly be surprised, as the lighting makes it look worse than it is(click HERE to read for yourself). Others are speculating that the lighter skin is due to past steroid usage that causes symptoms similar to vitiligo. I call bullsh*t…

He’s always had a problem being Afro-Dominican. It is a shame he would do this to himself. Can’t wait until he start rocking lace fronts and start mutilating his face – New Michael Jackson, anyone?
November 9th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
I wish people would stop refrencing Michael Jackson. This is not a vitiligo issue. This is a self hate issue.
For people like myself who actually do "suffer" from vitiligo it's insulting.
Furthermore….what the hell type of skin rejuvenation makes your hair straighter and is put on your lips???????
Lying ass

That's makeup. Even the most wealthy of celebs haven't been able to successfully lighten their skin because MAN hasn't figured out how to duplicate, thus change melanin! Most skin bleachers will blotch the skin, so I can believe it when people say that it looks worse up close. He probably tried some bleachers and realized it was a no go, so he has resorted to makeup. Don't even get me started on Sammy Sosa or most of these Afro-Cuban, Afro-Dominican players who come over here and find the whitest girl they can find and try to blend in those circles to be accepted. Racism and self-hate is really bad over there, so this isn't surprising.

Damn if that dont look like the same makeup Little Richard uses. Pancake 57?
November 9th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
He's Dominican, and there have been coloration issues in that country for years. If the skin-rejuvination and camera lighting made his skin appear lighter, then what's up with the blue/green contacts?
November 9th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
Skin juvenation??? GTFOH w/ that bullshit.
November 9th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
im not one for insulting ppl but he looks half past dead.
November 9th, 2009 at 7:07 pm
Not only did he have skin-rejuvenation, but looking at the pic up top, with his face and lips all lopsided and crooked, it looks like he had a stroke too.
November 9th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
why is that chiks left boob bigger than her right boob??
November 9th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Its sad.. i personally think he looked better dark skinned! lol appreciate your shade man!
PS: @Arrielle Brown · Damn if that dont look like the same makeup Little Richard uses. Pancake 57? <<THAT WAS FUNNYYYYY lol
November 9th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

November 9th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
Ok I can't speak on it, because I don't want to say the wrong thing. However, I hope it's not what other celebs have done to theirself. Let's believe it's makeup.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Sammy's and all his Dominican friends get 2 thumbs down for their hatred of their OBVIOUS African heritage. Many of them look more African than Black Americans. They kill me bigging up their slave master. A mess.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
He is going to pay for that skin bleaching later on in his life. That shit fucks your skin UP! SMH at darker skinned people trying to look lighter and Lighter skinned people (ahemm *kim kardashian) trying to look darker. When is this madness going to stop???

November 10th, 2009 at 2:16 am
He is an embarassment but he's not alone with the self-hate.It's not just Dominicans who suffered from this unfortunately. In Asia, countries like India,Philippines etc.. even African people are dying to be lighter. In rap videos what type of women do most rappers used as their leading ladies? You have famous Black men like Neyo,Babyface and many more who made comments about lighter being more better or more beautiful.
I'm Dominican and I don't have a self hate issue. My family are light skinned Dominicans but we are proud of our African/mixed heritage.Lol not all Dominicans are in denial and yes I'm ashamed with the rest of the idiost in my culture.
Sammy Sosa stop your lies, your are clearly bleaching your skin.I understand you were probably teased in the Dominican Rep for being dark with African features,so it's not all your fault. Now that you are famous, why couldn't you help the dark skinned Dominicans that went throught the same as you? no instead you are showing them that dark is ugly.
No one is buying your lame excuse.
This is my rant.

He looks like a grown Eddie Munster.
November 10th, 2009 at 4:50 am
I know I'm probably going 2 receive a lot of heat 4 this, but oh what the he!!….
It's funny 2 me, how CERTAIN people (of whatever race) wanna talk like us, dress like us, dance like us…….Wanna everything like us, except LOOK like us. Nobody wants 2 look like black people…….Hell, black people don't even wanna look like black people. People wanna pretty much take over our culture, but to actually look like us, IS UNHEARD OF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2 me, it seems like african americans are like rich wealthy millionare's (i;e urban culture),
& everybody else is like goldiggers (i;e good enough 2 mimick, but not good enough 2 respect), and that's my point….Nobody respects black people. I don't have a problem with people adopting OUR culture….I have a problem with people using US when it's convieniet.
Black people ain't no different, matter fact they're worst. People like babyface, neyo etc;……Who wants nothing 2 do with their OWN race, unless it's Black History Month or MLK'S birthday or something. SEE, THESE ARE THE TYPE OF PRICKS THAT REALLY CLINCHES MY JAWS…………….MAN, I'M SO IRRITATED, I CAN'T EVEN FINISH.

November 10th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
I agree! This is so embarrassing!
November 10th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
You never know how messed up in the head a person is until something like this happens. Kinda like we didn't know Chris Brown and Rihanna had violence in their familes until their beat down dust up.
Sammy looked perfectly fine, but clearly that mess was on his heart 'cause he had to spend major dollars to get that procedure. And I bet he thinks that he looks good. Can't change those African features though. He might need some more surgeries.
Gosh, good luck to his crazy zombie lookin' @ss.
November 10th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
One of my best friends is lighter Dominican and I have heard about how they are regarding skin color. It's really sad how darker skinned people are treated. But Sammy looks a hot mess. They should cast him in one of the Twilight movies because he looks like he'd fit right in.
November 10th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
If Sammy truly received skin rejuvenation treatments, the lightning will only be temporary- until the skin heals and the process is finished. Don't jump to conclusions, try doing some research on the various types of skin rejuvenation. Chemical peels , microdermabrasion, and some laser treatments can be of great benefit to those with acne ,sun damage, blotchiness , acne scars, etc. There are certain procedures for people of color, you have to be careful on what procedure you get and who does it ( preferably a dermatologist). it's best to wait until the skin is healed before you start taking pictures and making public appearances, because the skin may go through a period of peeling for 3-4 days( during that time you will look like you are peeling from a light to moderate sunburn) but after about 7-10 days the skin glows, begins to clear up and is so soft .In some people, the lightening is only temporary, the original skin tone will return after healing.
November 10th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
I believe you have touched on an excellent point. I agree with just about everything except no one wants to be black. Heffas injecting every part of their body with a foreign substance to obtain our shapely hips, butt and lips. They're also catchin skin cancer in spades laying out in the sun to get closer to our complexion. However, I think you're spot on with post.

To NO THANK YOU :
Black Americans are not the voices of all Blacks on earth(African descent).I don't understand why you think everyone wants to be like American Blacks, they don't.They appreciate some of your music and style. The same way some people like classical and opera music.Educated people don't imitate hood life and that's the part of your culture some of us don't like.
.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:30 am
The Black American community don't respect educated Blacks who don't worshipped hood/ghetto life, you referred to them as uncle toms. This is why some foreigners don't want to associate with your people, not because they don't like Blacks. They don't like that loud ignorant ghetto life that some of you glamorized so much. Black American culture it's not Black culture for everyone of African descent.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:30 am
You called yourselves African-Americans but you don't know nothing about the African continent. Not all Africans have nappy hair, flat nose and big lips, this is the lied you are told in America.Africa has the most diverse group of people, language, culture etc……There are Africans with straight hair, light eyes andsmall nose.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:31 am
I would have to say out of all places where African slaves were sent, the ones here in America are the most removed from African culture.Your culture don't have much in common with Africa at all.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:31 am
I'm not for people not loving themselves but I am tired of Black Americans thinking they are more Black/African than anyonelse.I am tired of Black Americans assuming their culture is universally Black-African culture for everyone of African descent.
Brasil has the highest number of blacks/people African descent outside of the African Continent.I don't see them advocating to be the voice and culture making of Black people.
When a foreigner or a Black person says they don't like American Blacks is not because they want to be White. No,your culture and ways turned them off, from Asian,to Blacks to Arbas. You are like children rebelling against Education, manners, class because you think it's behaving White.Your rebellion is only hurting the Black community.English is a White man's language no matter how you speak,so speak properly,it's for your advantage.I speak 4 languages,English being my last but I tried to speak all of them properly. You are telling Whites they are more superior when you referred to having an education and class is being White.
I'm Afro-Brasilian/ Caribbean but I preferred educated people and I don't associated with low class of any race.

I am tired of folks mentioning Michael as well because Michael HAD vitiligo! this fool just hates himself. That means he hates his parents, his whole heritage. You would think one, especially one of color, would want to embrace their skin, etc, especially when they are sucessful. This is self hate to the highest power!

Also meant to say if you are running into "hood" Blacks then you might want to check out where you are hanging and socializing. I am a Black American and I rarely encounter hood folks. Even if I did I still have no need to pretend I am better, what I see it as is a sign from the Lord that I need to do even more for my community because its apparent there are others that need me to help them rise to their highest potential not our of pity, but our of community growth. Remember class is not what you say, its what you do.

Dear Afro-Bras-Carib
You seem to have more learning to do. You have made blanket statements about Black Americans that are blatantly false. Black Americans do not dislike education and do not feel that all educated people are uncle toms. Not all of us call ourselves African-Americans, I much prefer Black or Negro. I personally have never been to Africa. Some of us are quite aware of the diversity within the continent of Africa because someone in our families taught us. (Those Africans north of the Sahara are more closely identified with the Arabs they have been interbreeding with for millenia.) But we are also aware that most of the African Ancestors that provided slaves for the Americas came from West Africa. Those Africans by and large did have kinky hair, dark skin, wide noses, and larger lips. We are aware that certain groups were chosen for the specialized skills that they had developed in their homelands. Black Americans are not the most removed from the African culture, our so called uneducated speech are based on patterns brought from Africa with our ancestors.
November 11th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
Most Blacks have incorporated traditions from not only our African ancestors, but also the Indigenous and European Ancestors. We have also picked up different cultural habits from all who have reached our shores since the founding of the colonies. You act as if Caribbean or South American culture has developed within a vacumn, which is impossible. If I believed everything I see on T.V. or the Newspaper I would think that your part of the world is the most savage and brutal.
