Wale: Pretty Girls (VIDEO)
Twitter was abuzz after Wale premiered his video for his song, Pretty Girls, on BET’s 106th and Park. I didn’t get to see it when everyone else did but the major complaint seemed to be that that the pretty girls featured throughout the video were all light skinned.
What do you guys think of the song and video?

I'd like to see more of my darker skinned sistas get some shine on tv but unless you are a well established artist you probably have little to no say over the direction of your videos.

I saw a couple of "darkies" thrown in for good measure…smh. Personally, I'm tired of not seeing me ANYWHERE! Black women are absent from film and television. I don't blame Wale though.

Well as a respone to LaShawnna Stanley and?? as if that makes it better, then i'll just direct my disdain towards the director and commisioners… blah

True…I saw it as an excuse, actually…which is why the comment was deleted.

Now lord knows y'all saw some brown skinned ladies in there. There weren't any dark skinned but there were a few brown. They didn't get a lot of air time like the lighter "fair" skinned women. We got to do better but damn its not going to be overnight. One step at a time, but we don't need a break after two steps sooooo. #kanyeshrug ….. wait speaking of kanye! What did he say in that gold digger song "When he get on he gone leave yo ass for a white girl" yeah well I think its better said with this video a light skinned girl. jk jk jk

IM lovin the song. It has a gogo feel to it. Wale is puttin DC on the map

LOL@Honey Bee! They can't dance. I am exhausted with this subject but it seems to keep coming up. I am confused. Are we talking light skinned black women or light skinned women in general? All I saw was a bunch of white, hispanic, brazilian, etc women with a few black women light or dark. My thing is in these videos you also don't see plus size or fat girls, girls with flat chest and butts, girls without a head full of weave and face full of fake lashes and makeup etc. We probably all can be mad about something when it comes down to it. If you ask me black women are becoming irrelevant all together. If it wasn't for our beautiful big butts you probably wouldn’t see any of us. I believe what Lashawnna said is true though. I don't think the artist always hand pick the models.

Can we all take a moment and he happy that the video didn't include gratuitous ass shaking? Yes, the video didn't have a lot of dark skinned sisters. (I'm not light skin just for the record), but all in all, it wasn't Wale's fault. He doesn't have that much control over his videos being that he's a new artist. (Despite his years being underground).

if you listen to Wales album he does have issues with skin tones, although that doesnt excuse.
I really dont tihnk he cares. Hes a new artist and he doesnt really have a huge female following..so

Uh, excuse you? "It's not going 2 be overnight" you say?
You DO realize that we're talking about "BLACK PEOPLE" heah,
i;e "BLACKS EXCEPTING BLACKS!"
SERIOUSLY, think about that '1' line………………………………………………..
Pretty much proves how "F*CKED UP" our mentality is (SMMFH)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 9th, 2010 at 7:45 pm
GOD DAMN BLACK WOMEN DON'T EXIST ANYMORE AND BEING FROM THE DC AREA I'M ESPECIALLY OFFENDED. THERE ARE SOOO MANY BEAUTIFUL BLACK SISTAS RIGHT HERE IN DC IF HE WANTED TO REPRESENT THE DISTRICT WHY DIDN'T WE SEE ANY OF THEM. I'M DISAPPOINTED BUT SOMEHOW NOT SURPRISED. AND I DON'T WANT TO HEAR THE BS ABOUT HE COULDN'T CHOOSE THE GIRLS, HE HAS A MOUTH. DAMN BLACK MEN CAN'T SPEAK OF FOR BLACK WOMEN WTF!!!!

SAD, BUT (UNFORTUNATELY) TRUE!

Why is this even an issue??? The video was hot. The girls were pretty. So what if there wasnt dark skin gurls everywhere..who gives a fuck. Its a fucking video. Im a coco sista and that was the last thing i was thinkin about when i watched this video. BTY… they did have a healthy gurl in this and skinny, and thick.. I swear some folks just need to find something wrong with EVERYTHING. Have you ever wonder why we dont see coco sista's… maybe they ass dont get up and audition for this shit… Maybe they like shakin that ass rather than lettin their natural beauty be the star of the show….didnt think of that huh? I loved song.. now i have a visual..

I think that it is funny that people are upset that there aren't many dark skinned woman featured in this video or videos in general. What I truly find interesting is that that there aren't a lot of black women featured in music videos. They might be in the background but they aren't the main girls. But black women as a whole get ostratasized for shaking our asses in music videos when a lot of times it isn't even us. I think that is crazy. I am happy that there aren't many dark skinned women in the videos. Hell I would rather there were no black women in the videos period. It would be great if they were all in school or had careers. Black women have been turned into sexual objects to a point that no one expects anything else from us.

yea i could tell tht it wont gonna be a mixed bag of nuts in the first 5 secs of the vid, non the less i dig the song. anddd i am SO pleased the girls, for the most part was dressed, and didnt shake ther a*s in the camera (maybe b/c they didnt have the rythm o_O) and there was TWO pleasently plump honeys in the vid. anywhooo – this is the age old tale. im not suprised by the lack of dark skin ladies in the vids. i dont approve of it but what can ya do? personally for wale [in his own life, outside of the fame] its alll about what he likes, but i doubt tht has anything to do with the vid cuz its outta his reach. take it with a grain of salt [[shrug]]

@miss thang,
They (unfortunately) "SHAKE THEIR A$$E$," because as far as today's Hip Hop is concerned, "THAT'S ALL THEY'RE GOOD FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
And as far as auditioning goes….I'm quite sure that they go on as many (if not all) audtions that these yellow broads go on, but (UNFORTUNATELY) they can barely get a f*cking break, because their complexion is totally "UNEXCEPTABLE" by the VERY men "WHO LOOKS JUST LIKE THEM (SMMFH)!!!!!!!!!!"
Which is why (OF COURSE) "Beautiful Brown Women" like myself, get steaming mad & nausiated when we "CONSTANTLY" see "BULLSH*TTTT" like this…….
Get it?….Keyword, "CONSTANTLY," as in "This ish happens ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!"

The one with the glasses was dark skinned but it could be many reasons. He may have a specific type which is light skinned women, like alot of black women prefer dark skinned men. It may be low self esteem because it might have gotten cracked on about his complexion when he was younger so to feel like he truly made it he only messes with the mixed women. Or it may have been the directors decision but I say he should have got those ladies from Gucci Man's Lemonade video them dark skinned girls were BAD lol!

This is what it has come to huh black people? We are now demanding that dark skinned girls get the right to shine as video hos because all the video hos these days are light skinned. I'm glad we now have our priorities in check. Martin Luther King would be so proud. I'm sure his dream involved dark skinned rump shakers in cheesy rap videos. Can't let all these high yella broads get all the shine. Way to go guys, way to f'kin go. You take a stand. Morons.
February 10th, 2010 at 7:19 pm
i seen some brown skinned chicks. & i feel like as an artist or any creative human being has the right to use certain people or pieces in their work. yes, the public may not appeal to it or even like it, but that's what makes the artist or production team happy, so we go with that first.
if you think about it, this applies to youtubers, facebookers, myspacers, cnn, and other media outlets whether famous or not. we do sh*t in out life that MOST people don't like or can't stand, but we do it anyway cuz we usually don't give a fukk about what others think or it makes US happy.
