LaurynHill Jail MissJia 500x285 Ms. Lauryn Hill Sentenced To 3 Months In Jail For Tax Evasion

Despite inking a deal with Sony Records in order to pay off her $970,000 tax debt before the deadline, a New Jersey judge has sentenced Ms. Lauryn Hill to 3 months in a federal prison, followed by 3 more months of house arrest, and 9 months of supervision after failing to pay taxes on the $1.8 million she earned from 2005 to 2007.

Hill’s attorney asked the judge for leniency due to her charity work and 6 children, but the judge was not moved.

According to TMZ:

The 37-year-old former Fugee pled guilty last year to three counts of tax evasion for failing to file returns on $1.8 million she earned from 2005 to 2007. Lauryn’s attorney asked for mercy because of her charity work and 6 kids … but the judge wasn’t buying it.

During the hearing, the judge ordered Hill to report to prison by July 8. It’s unclear where Hill will serve her time.

Hill was present during the hearing, and delivered a statement to the judge in which she compared her situation to slavery.

‘I was put into a system I didn’t know the nature of. … I’m a child of former slaves. I got into an economic paradigm and had that imposed on me,’ Hill said.

She continued, “I sold 50 million units … now I’m up here paying a tax debt. If that’s not likened to slavery, I don’t know what is.’

Do you think her sentence was a bit drastic? Listen to her first Sony release, Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix), below, and post your thoughts!

Lauryn Hill Miss Jia Lauryn Hill Pens Open Letter About New Record Deal & Financial Woes

Lately it seems when you hear the name Lauryn Hill, it’s surrounded by legal issues and financial drama. Rumors and reports have been flying about Miss Hill’s tax evasion charges for a while now, and last week, it was all about her eviction woes.

Well, it looks like the Grammy Award-winning artist is officially sick of the gossip, and she’s broken her silence, speaking out about the issues on her Tumblr page.

In regards to the eviction rumors:

I’d like to set the record straight: I am not squatting, and I do not owe any money to my landlord. I have always stayed current on rent. I was raised in South Orange, which is why these allegations are not only false, but insulting. I am in talks with the town about resolving an unrelated issue, regarding how I use my home to work on my music, which has nothing to do with my financial obligations.

Won’t it be great when real journalism returns to replace inaccurate tabloid harassment.

On her new record deal and tax issues:

It has been reported that I signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes. Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released. And yes, I am working on new music.

I’ve remained silent, after an extensive healing process. This has been a 10+ year battle, for a long time played out behind closed doors, but now in front of the public eye. This is an old conflict between art and commerce… free minds, and minds that are perhaps overly tethered to structure. This is about inequity, and the resulting disenfranchisement caused by it. I’ve been fighting for existential and economic freedom, which means the freedom to create and live without someone threatening, controlling, and/or manipulating the art and the artist, by tying the purse strings.

It took years for me to get out of the ‘parasitic’ dynamic of my youth, and into a deal that better reflects my true contribution as an artist, and (purportedly) gives me the control necessary to create a paradigm suitable for my needs. I have been working towards this for a long time, not just because of my current legal situation, but because I am an artist, I love to create, and I need the proper platform to do so.

The nature of my new business venture, as well as the dollar amount reported, was inaccurate, only a portion of the overall deal. Keep in mind, my past recordings have sold over 50,000,000 units worldwide, earning the label a tremendous amount of money (a fraction of which actually came to me).

Only a completely complicated set of traps, manipulations, and inequitable business arrangements could put someone who has accomplished the things that I have, financially in need of anything. I am one artist who finds value in openly discussing the dynamics within this industry that force artists to compromise or distort themselves and what they do, rather than allowing them to make the music that people need. There are volumes that could (and will) be said.

MLH

No word when we can expect to hear new music from Lauryn (or when she’ll actually pay those damn taxes), but let’s just hope that both happen sooner than later.

Lauryn Hill 500x332 Lauryn Hill Kicks Off Tour With Black Rage Spoken Word

Last night, Lauryn Hill and Nas kicked off their highly anticipated, Life is Good/Black Rage joint tour in Dallas, Texas.

Although we haven’t heard much from Lauryn lately (minus all of the tax drama), she effortlessly hit the stage like she hadn’t even been gone. She delivered classic cuts for the crowd, and also debuted a new ‘song’ entitled Black Rage. Miss Hill recited the lyrics in spoken word form, intro-ing it by saying,

‘Obviously this is a song about confrontation.’

I don’t know about you, but I’m super excited for Lauryn to be back on the scene. (I would seriously LOVE to be in the house for a live rendition of If Ruled the World.) I can’t wait to hear what else she has in store!

Get into the performance below, and post your thoughts.

laurynhill wyclef Wyclef Thought He Was The Father Of Lauryn Hills First Child

Rapper/Producer, Wyclef Jean, has released excerpts from his autobiography, Purpose: An Immigrant’s Story (available tomorrow). If any of you were Fugees fans and hoping they would reunite for another album or at least a tour, you can just hang that up after this…

According to Wyclef, when he was cheating on his wife, Claudinette, with group member, Lauryn Hill, she lied to him and led him to believe that he was the father of her first child, Zion. It wasn’t until he was born that he found out that Rohan Marley was his father.

For the next nine months, I assumed her child was mine. It was easy to do as we rode the wave of success. In my mind, it was complicated and dangerous, but it was beautiful, too: If Lauryn and I had a child together, it was, to me, a product of our music and everything we’d worked to achieve. It made sense to my heart, as much as I knew it was wrong in my mind. If that’s what it came down to, I knew I would be honest with Claudinette and hope I didn’t lose her, just the way I knew I would do right by our child and so would Lauryn. I was proud of it when we performed in Haiti, because Lauryn was visibly pregnant. So to me, we were playing a concert for my people with our child growing inside of her.

When Lauryn gave birth, I learned the truth: the child wasn’t mine. It was Rohan Marley’s. And in that moment something died between us. I was married and Lauryn and I were having an affair, but she had led me to believe that the baby was mine, and I couldn’t forgive that. [..] She could no longer be my muse. Our love spell was broken through her creation.

Clef goes on to say that her entire debut album, The Miseducation Of Lauren Hill, was based on their relationship.

Meanwhile, Lauryn was writing The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which she recorded for the most part in Jamaica. She was there with Rohan, with whom she went on to have four more kids, even though he was still married to someone else. I can’t speak for her, but I don’t think Lauryn knew about this until she was already pregnant. Rohan had gotten married years before, had two children with that girl and when things didn’t work out, never divorced. He and Lauryn kept having children and just continued on unmarried because legally he couldn’t marry her.

She might have been with him in Jamaica at the time, but musically and lyrically she was still with me. Her whole album was about her trying to make sense of our relationship, and when I listen to Miseducation, it’s like reading a diary of our personal history.

Hmm. So Lauryn was with two married men at the same time? Post your thoughts!

Oprah Lauryn You Wont be Seeing Lauryn Hill on Oprahs Next Chapter

Well damn, I guess there are interviews that even Oprah can’t land.

After last night’s episode of Next Chapter with Rihanna aired, one fan sent Oprah a tweet saying that she would like to see her sit down with Lauryn Hill. Now, I’m sure Miss Winfrey was literally flooded with tweets throughout the evening, but somehow she actually caught that one and replied.

Oprah Tweet You Wont be Seeing Lauryn Hill on Oprahs Next Chapter

Although tons of us would love to see that interview go down, I’m definitely not surprised that Lauryn declined. She’s always been known for being a very private person, and with all of her current legal troubles, I just couldn’t imagine her opening up like that (not even for Oprah).

Besides Lauryn, who else would you guys want to see on Next Chapter?

Sidenote: I absolutely love that Oprah stays in her mentions and actually replies to her followers!

nas lauryn summer jam Lauryn Hill Performs with Nas, Releases Statement Regarding Guest Appearance with Nicki Minaj

Summer Jam concert attendees were delighted (and shocked) when Lauryn Hill hit the stage with Nas for a performance set. Although Ms. Hill only released one album, she’s one of the most talked about artists when it comes to missing the music of yesteryear.

Nas and Lauryn took to the stage to perform If I Ruled the World, as well as a few snippets from her songs with The Fugees.

Rumor also hit the web that Lauryn was slated to take the stage with Nicki Minaj as a special guest, but I guess she didn’t get the memo.

No disrespect to Nicki, but I need to clear up an inaccuracy. I was not scheduled to be a special guest on her set at Summer Jam, I was invited by Nas to perform with him. I don’t have details on exactly what transpired between the station and the artists, but I do support artists standing by their beliefs, and walking with integrity. We have to find a better way to commercially exploit music, while giving artists their proper respect. This cannot be done while taking their contributions for granted, or trying to control the scope of their growth and power through threats and fear tactics. We can do better than this, there is a better way, or else ‘we’ (the proverbial we) find ourselves in danger of being hypocrites!!!

Ms. Lauryn Hill

Dah welp!

During college, my room mate use to KILL The Miseducation… album. To say that she got on my last nerve is the understatement of the year. But as time went on, I really began to appreciate Lauryn as an artist, and her voice was everything to me.
