It’s no exaggeration to refer to Kerry Washington as Hollywood’s latest ‘it girl,’ and it seems like her talents are being recognized around every corner.

The Scandal actress has landed the cover of Elle Magazine’s June issue, and opens up about her recent success, the red carpet process, and what she would be doing if she wasn’t acting.

On her current success:

I’m the luckiest broad in Hollywood now. To be the lead actor on Scandal and to be in the highest-earning Tarantino movie- I don’t get to ask for more.

On preparing for the red carpet:

I found out I enjoy the process. All these people show up at my house, they all have kits, someone has dresses. And it’s like, Let’s have fun. It’s not all about me. We’re able to create stories on the red carpet.

On the career she initially thought she’d end up in:

I imagined I’d be a clinical psychologist, with a focus on how performance shapes identity. I’d figure out ways to use role-playing in the healing of people.

Kerry Washington is doing some big things lately.

The Scandal star is the first African American woman to lead a network drama in almost 40 years, and because of that, she’s landed on the latest cover of Parade.

Inside the issue, the face of Olivia Pope talks about making history with the series, their portrayal of Washington D.C. and she touches on her role in Django Unchained as well.

On making history by starring in Scandal:

I didn’t realize…when I was auditioning for the role. I knew that in my lifetime I’d never seen it. But it didn’t compute to me that I’d be making history. I just fell in love with the character.

On Scandal’s portrayal of Washington D.C.:

The story lines…push what’s possible. But there are stories on the news that change what we think is possible all the time. You hear about a governor who’s disappeared into the Appalachian trail because he has a South American lover, or somebody else’s behavior on Twitter. I mean, if you want to look at presidents having affairs—there are about four I can think of off the top of my head.

On filming Django Unchained:

I feel like I barely survived Django emotionally. The violence. Hearing the N-word every day. It cost me a lot psychologically, but it was worth it to tell that story.

Whether it’s fashion or life, I like to go for it. As long as I feel good about what I’m wearing, it doesn’t matter if so-and-so calls it ugly.

The cast of Django Unchained have been hopping through Europe for the film’s international premieres, and of course, the fabulous Kerry Washington has easily taken command of the red carpet.

At a recent stop in Berlin, the Scandal star went a bit unconventional with her look. She hit the step and repeat in a conservative, checkered, Louis Vuitton dress paired with white Christian Louboutin pumps and a matching headband.

The beautiful, Kerry Washington, graces the latest cover of Women’s Health magazine. Inside, she talks about her latest role in Django Unchained, what she would be doing if she wasn’t an actress, and her go to healthy snacks.

On prepping for Django Unchained:

One of the things that I really love most about my job is the research part of it… So, I studied a lot. It’s kind of hard to articulate the level of preparation that we all had to do for this film because so much of it was emotional and psychological preparation. It’s hard to talk about because we all had to go into a part of American history that is so dark and complicated and fraught with the past sins of this country

On what she’d be doing if she wasn’t an actress:

If I wasn’t an actress, I would probably be a teacher. Either an elementary school teacher or a yoga teacher. Both of which I did when I was living in New York pursuing a career in acting. I liked doing both of those things very much. I think it would surprise people to know that what I really wanted to do as a child was to be the woman in the Shamu show at Sea World. And the big joke in my family is that I started taking Marine Biology and I was like, forget the whale, I’ll just be on stage by myself.

On her go to snacks:

I am not a vegan, but I like vegan protein shakes. I mix them with coconut water instead of regular water. That’s my secret to having them taste better. I love popcorn. I could live on popcorn. The writers of Scandal have made my character Olivia Pope have a similar relationship with popcorn. But I don’t mind because I get to eat popcorn at work.
