Celebrities are starting to learn that a popular term or phrase could be reproduced on merchandise by the masses without cutting the originator a check…and they aren’t taking it lightly.

Earlier today, UGK frontman, Bun B, took to twitter to warn fans and onlookers about the word Trill.

I guess everybody putting Trill on everything like nobody has a trademark on it. When you get that letter in the mail don’t act surprised. Using trill and showing love to UGK and Port Arthur, the land of the trill, is one thing. But some of these cats think they made it up. No. I know some cats show love and respect. But using the term for money and not breaking bread with Pimp family ain’t keeping it trill at all. I just wanted to say that. Carry on with ya holiday season. See you on ’13!

According to twitter, the late Pimp C’s wife, Chinara Butler, trademarked the word some years ago and actually has gone after various businesses/brands for unauthorized usage.

And somewhere in Never Never Land….

Drake isn’t too keen on merchandising the acronym YOLO (you only live once). He posted a series of pics to his instagram account (@ChampagnePapi…corny ass) making his followers aware of his intent….kinda

I’m very familiar with the trademarking process, and feel that if artists want to ensure that no one profits off their “bright idea,” they should have that application at the USPTO as soon as the word/phrase hits the streets. It’s truly the only way to protect yourself these days. I did a mini search (read: I glanced over it) of the word TRILL on the USPTO official website, and while there were several “live” registration numbers on file, I didn’t notice one specifically listed under Pimp C’s legal name nor was there one listed under his wife’s name. They could have it filed under someone else’s name, but eh…

As far as Drake goes, who cares? YOLO, IMO, was almost as stupid as the “stop snitching” campaign. Although he MIGHT have a hard time proving his case, I’m sure it won’t stop his idle threats. Post your thoughts!
