So Natural: Monique Coleman

Recently, Disney’s High School Musical star, Monique Coleman, hit the red carpet for the Young Hollywood Awards rockin’ a natural look. I won’t even get into the debate of whether or not it’s indeed all of her hair (mainly b/c I HATE when folks question the authenticity of a Black woman’s hair just b/c it looks “nice” *side eye). What I DO want to ask you is “What’s wrong with it?”

When the initial pictures hit, I read comments (assuming they were from other blacks) asking why she would ‘leave the house with her hair like that,’ or ‘I like her hair better when it’s straight’ (not realizing that MOST of the time that we saw her photo’ed, she was rocking a bad wig). Understanding that ‘better’ hairstyles are truly a matter of opinion, it seems that most comments were filled with malice towards women who choose to rock their own natural hair & look.

I happen to like her hair like this. I don’t know that my own natural hair could pull off such a huge and beautiful ‘fro but I give her MAJOR props for trying (plus the b*tch has a nice shape with beautiful skin)! What do you guys think? Why is natural hair shunned so badly, especially within ‘our’ community?

    I happen to like it too! I’m not completely sure why the majority of people (no matter the ethnicity) prefer straight hair over kinky. All I know is, if my hair sat that nicely in a fro, I’d be pickin’ the haters out my comb after I fluffed my fro. It’s not for everyone but it CERTAINLY works for her. Loves it.

  2. Arnetta Green Says:

    Because Black folk still got the self-hate thing going on. I think she looks beautiful too!

  3. Elle B Says:

    The reason why black people respond this way to natural hair is because they have allowed the white society to make us feel that way. Every time I wear my fro my mom says “Back in the day we would have never wore our hair like that.” It’s as if they were ashamed and some people still are. They won’t admit that. They are ashamed of what God gave us altering it to look like something else…..pitiful

    I don’t know where we came from loving Afros to hating them.. Personally my hair is natural and I love it I can wear it anyway I want.. Curly, stright, twists, braids.. I get a positive reaction however it is..

    I absolutely love this ! It looks better and it kinda highlights her flawless skin

    i honestly love her hair like that… and the fact a lot of black people can’t learn to accept that they are not born with straight hair kills me… i understand that it may not be accepted in the work place, but if all black people wore their hair the way it came out of the womb, then it would not be as big an issue… {so sad that we are still stuck in that mentality}

    IT LOOKS GOOD AND ITS REAL!

    I actually admire people who wear their natural. I think that it is beautiful and different. I can believe that our people would hate on the natural because they have self hate issues within themselves.

  9. MJ Says:

    i just recently cut off all of my relaxed hair but i do think it has something to do with self hate. everyone keeps asking me why i did it but i dont even care because i like it & it`s better than perming your hair any day.

    Well i have natural also, but i dont think her fro is approprite for that type of event. It just doesn’t go with the outfit. I guess my gripe is really about her fashion sense. There is nothing wrong with a fro, but i’m pretty sure you wouldn’t show up to your corporate job rockin this thing here. She could have fixed it up a little bit. Her ass just went wild kingdom on everybody.

    FYL to all the people that down natural hair. To not prefer it on your own head is ok..but to bash other women that decide to get off the creamy crack is el lame-o.

    If you’re nappy and you know it clap your hands!! *claps* (I’m gonna put that on a t-shirt asap btw)I think her fro is fab and bold and full. I see nothing wrong with it. In the black community you still have negroids spitting that “good hair” nonsense and the like. First of all you have to deprogram this foolishness society has fed us for decades about what’s acceptable and attractive. Then you have to educate yourself on how to properly take care of natural hair or it will indeed look a hot buttered mess. Some people just aren’t up for the challenge. Some people would rather fit in than stand out. A wise man once said, “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds.” But ignorance is bliss…may they enjoy it.

    I really like the natural look on her and have to totally disagree with msconception. Why is it we (people of color w/naturally kinky hair) have to assimilate ourselves to what others feel is ideal? I wear my hair natural and usually I wear it curly, but occassionally I will flat-iron it. EVERY time I wear my hair straight, I get the “I like your hair like that” comment from someone. It’s like their nice way of telling me that they don’t like the natural look I normally rock. I got over people’s opinions a long time ago when I first decided to chop it all off and get rid of the chemicals.
