Earthquake Devastates Haiti + We Can Help

A major earthquake hit impoverished Haiti on Tuesday, toppling buildings in the capital Port-au-Prince, burying residents in rubble and causing many deaths and injuries.

The magnitude 7.0 quake, whose epicentre was inland and only 16 kilometres from the capital Port-au-Prince, sent panic-stricken people screaming into the streets of the city, as a cloud of dust and smoke from falling buildings rose into the sky.

As darkness fell amid scenes of chaos and anguished cries from victims, residents desperately tried to dig out survivors or searched for missing relatives in debris-strewn streets.

A hospital collapsed from the quake, The Associated Press reported. Also, damage was done to an airport and the presidential palace, and a hotel collapsed, Haitian radio reported.

Other government buildings, including the parliament building, and a cathedral in the capital, have also been damaged, according to Agence France-Presse, citing Haitian TV.

Wyclef, who is Haitian, put out the word that we can help. If you text YELE to 501501 on your mobile phone, you will donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund. The $5 will be charged to your monthly bill. You can get more information about the foundation by visiting the website HERE. FYI: If you can buy a ringtone, callback tone, or video game for your celly once or twice a month, you can definitely assist in the relief efforts of HAITI!

Awareness: Keep 1 Warm

Dear Miss Jia,

I was watching the news the other night where they showed people sleeping outside and in metro stations to try and keep warm during the winter. I saw men wrapped in trash bags and women and children lying on the street with nothing but the shirt on their backs.

So, I started an organization called “Keep 1Warm.” Our mission is to hand out blankets to the homeless on the streets of Washington DC. Because we just started, we need a bit of help and that’s where you come in. We’re asking for small monetary donations (even as low as a couple dollars) so that we can purchase the yarn to make the blankets.

We believe that if we can make just one more person warm, that’ll be one less person who has to suffer through the coldest season of the year. Maybe we could save a life. Our goal is to knit 50 blankets by December 1, 2010, but we’re hoping to make much more than that! A donation button is on the site provided below. If you would like to be recognized for your donation, please email me and I’ll send you a thank you card. Thank you so much for your help!!

Sincerely,

Robyn

Alicia Keys Performs for World AIDS Day Charity

Alicia Keys offered a charity performance at the Nokia Theater in New York for World AIDS Day. Jay-Z also made an appearance. A couple days ago, I posted that Janet Jackson always has some really good performance shots and I have to say the same thing about Alicia. Scandal notwithstanding, I think that it’s amazing how charitable she is. Can’t knock that at all…

Mary J. Blige Opens Women’s Center

Mary J. Blige has opened up a women’s center in New York for the battered and abused. This is definitely a good look. For years, she’s had songs and conducted interviews where she talks about her past so putting something like this into action definitely shows that she’s making an effort. Post your thoughts on the video!
