A little over a week ago, Drake became a proud high school graduate. Although one would think that this deserved a round of applause, I was extremely disappointed to find out that instead of offering up a few praises, the Canadian rapper was actually clowned on Twitter for his efforts.
Over the course of a few years, Drake has managed to build himself into a brand that surpasses many of his peers that have been in music for way longer than he is. While I’m absolutely not what one would call a fan, I think that he did something that, technically, he didn’t have to do. So many teenagers (especially Black ones) look to music as a way out of school and think that it’s an easy ticket. They feel that they don’t need to worry about any future plans because they’ll be scooped up by a major label and will be living the good life, sans high school diploma or college degree. Drake didn’t HAVE to do it, but he did…and in my humble opinion, it’s commendable.
Now that I’m off my high horse this fine Monday morning, check out the video of the graduation ceremony at Toronto’s Jarvis Collegiate Institute, and post your thoughts.
