We knew that the BET awards couldn’t go down this year without at least an ounce of drama.

During this year’s award ceremony (click HERE to check the recap), Mindless Behavior hit the stage with Mike Epps to present the award for Best R&B Female Artist. Before presenting Beyonce with the award, Ray Ray took a swipe at Lauryn Hill and her recent tax drama.

You (referring to Mike Epps) sing bad — like Lauryn Hill’s tax accountant bad.

Ouch! Well, the fellas felt the sting of the reactions on Twitter and called in to 106th & Park to clear the air.

I want to apologize about the Lauryn Hill joke. I didn’t mean no harm by it. I hope everyone can forgive me. It was like a big thing on Twitter and everything, so I truly apologize. I respect Lauryn Hill and all of them like that.

While I definitely believe that the joke was in poor taste, I don’t necessarily think that they’re 100% to blame. More than likely, this was the end result of some bored ass writer for BET who thought it’d be ‘cute’ to make them sound current. At the same time, I’ve heard that publicists/managers are usually given the opportunity to go over what will be on the teleprompter before their stars are actually put on the spot. If the latter is true, shame on their people for thinking that joke would be a good idea.
